Outdoor IP Cameras

Outdoor IP Cameras can withstand the elements: sun, heat, wind, rain, dust, cold, snow, and ice. Outdoor network cameras can elect to have the IEC give them an IP rating. Outdoor Camera manufacturers also can elect to not have their camera tested by the IEC and can choose to make claims about their cameras themselves.

IP Ratings of Outdoor Network Cameras

The International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) international standard 60529 rating board tests and declares the results of different IP and Analog Security Camera enclosures as they relate to dust, water, temperature, and other environmental factors. If it has been tested, outdoor IP cameras can have one of these ratings:

IP66

  • Full protection from dust and solid matter larger than dust
  • Safe from powerful water jets

IP67

  • Offering full protection from dust and solid matter larger than dust
  • Safe for immersion in water up to 1 meter

IP69

  • Offering full protection from dust and solid matter larger than dust
  • Safe for immersion in water at depths greater than 1 meter

No rating

This means that the manufacturer declined to have their camera tested. An IP rating is an elective process. A camera's manufacturer may have not yet complete the process or may have decided to not get it approved.
