NVR - Network Video Recorder
NVRs are DVRs specifically for IP Cameras.
Whereas in a traditional DVR, the video files are encoded (changed from video feeds to files) in the DVR; with NVRs, the video is encoded and processed in the IP Camera and then sent to the NVR to be saved, viewed, and stored. NVRs do not have video capture cards but usually have sophisticated (or multiple) Ethernet or wireless ports.
Often NVRs are mistakenly called DVRs; this confusion is multiplied by the fact that PC Based DVRs have both the capabilities of a DVR and a NVR.
NVRs work with IP (Network) Cameras; if you have analogy security cameras, you should stick with a DVR. If you have both, please consult our PC-Based DVRs.

About NVRs - Network Video Recorders
IP cameras utilize a NVR to store, save, and view the video that is encoded and digitized in a IP Camera. NVRs allows advanced control of the video surveillance systems and projects the video into the security team's control center.
NVRs are to IP camera what DVRs are to analog cameras. With an analog system, cameras send video signal to the DVR which turns the analog signal into digital video files. Since, IP cameras deal directly with digital signals, they do not need to encode the video files, and instead focus on controlling them, displaying them, and often running advanced video analytic software.
Many PC Based DVRs also have the capacity to function as NVRs, but depend upon their internal components. If you have security camera system that has both IP cameras and analog cameras, your best choice is often to use a PC-Based DVR/NVR.
