Video Server

Video Servers translate analog CCTV camera signals into digital images that can then be sent (or viewed) directly over an IP network (or the Internet) like IP Cameras. The main advantage of a Video Server is to allows multiple viewers to access the video feed of a analog CCTV signal at one time and at different locations. Some video servers also have serial ports that allow remote operation of PTZ cameras.

About Video Servers

A video server is a device that you attach to an analog security camera that allows it to work with a IP Camera System and a NVR. Video Servers are primarily used with PTZ cameras and when upgrading part of an existing analog system to an IP security camera system.

Many Video Servers have serial ports which allow one to connect a PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) camera joystick to operate the surveillance camera.

Technically, Video Servers digitize analog signals. As such, even some purely analog systems can use them to transfer data through existing Cat 5 cable runs.
