Intro to IP Cameras

ip cameras

IP Cameras shoot in HD at 720p, 1080p, 3MP (about 50% higher resolution than 1080P), or 5MP

Resolution is measured in Megapixels

Can be Broadcasted Online Natively

Recored by a NVR

easy to install

IP cameras are Digital and connect via Cat5 (Networking) Cable

Cat5 Cable, as shown in the image to the left, is the cable used in creating computer networks. IP cameras have their own internal IP addresses, so you will not need to do a home run (a cable run from the camera to NVR) for every camera. As long as you put your camera and your NVR on the same network, they will be able to see each other and work flawlessly. You can use network switches to consolidate cable runs so that you can do a branching cable design.

With an IP camera system, this one wire caries both your video data and your power. The power is added by the NVR (if you made a home run and our using our Networker Pro POE models, which has built-in POE ports) or you can use a POE injector or POE switch to power your cameras at convenient locations.

The resolution of IP cameras is measured in Megapixels and they record in HD and Beyond

Our IP cameras come in four resolution options: 1.3MP which shoots at 720P, 2.0MP which shoots at 1080P, 3.0 MP. and 5.0 MP.

You record an IP camera with a NVR. Some NVRs on the market are really terrible (and can't record HD footage on every channel), but ours can record at 720P or 1080P at 30 FPS without any limitations. (They can also do 3MP or 5MP, if you reduce the framerate).

So, feel free to pair our IP cameras with any of our NVRs.

Why People Choose High Definition IP Cameras

1080P Quality

The main selling point of IP cameras is the increased resolution. HD quality recording makes identifying faces and license plates much, much easier than standard definition. Although IP cameras are more expensive, HD recording can also mean that you don't need to purchase as many cameras to properly secure an area, since you can record at a wider angle and still get footage that can identify suspects and be used in court. IP cameras also can be viewed online or on a tablet or phone app directly without needing a recorder, since they have their own IP addresses.

Plug & Play Ease of Use

With our line of Networker PRO POE NVRs and our SCW IP Cameras you'll have no trouble installing and configuring the cameras. Just plug the single Cat5 cable into the NVR's POE ports, and the NVR will setup, manage, and power the cameras for you.

One cable and you're done.

interoperability with PSIA and ONVIF

Interoperability

Our HD IP Cameras and NVRs are compatible with the ONVIF Profile S and PSIA standards.

These open industry standard allow your HD devices to communicate with other digital devices like sensors, access control keycards, alarms, analytics, fleet management, and more.

ONVIF Profile S is the industry standard communication protocal for the surveillance industry. Cameras and NVRs from Honeywell, Panasonic, Dynacolor, Sony, Samsung, Pelco, Bosch, Axis, HikVision, Arecont Vision, use ONVIF encoding and can work together.

PSIA helps other security devices communicate with each other by using a common language. Consult your SAAS service, alarm company, or other manufacturer to determine PSIA compatibility.

Video Analytics

Video analytics is a series of technologies that automatically analyzes video to detect and determine events not based on a single image but upon the change in the video stream.

Our NVRs have basic video analytics such as motion detection and email alerts built into the units.

Our Free SCW Easy Watch Software includes more advanced features such as face recognition, intrusion detection, tamper or scene change detection, and missing object detection.

For more complex video analytics such as license plate recognition and recording or facial recognition and identity, you may wish to use third party software. Our IP cameras and NVRs are compatible with every major third-party video analytics software including Milestone, Exaq, Axxon, Genetec, NUUO.

Choosing between Bullet and Dome Cameras

There are five main body styles of IP cameras, but most people end up choosing between Dome and Bullet Cameras. Our Bullet cameras are weatherproof, mount on the side of the wall, and can have long-range lenses; they are best used outdoors. Dome cameras can hang from the ceiling or mount on the wall and can be used indoors and outdoors. Some IP Dome cameras are vandal-proof and most of our dome IP cameras are weatherproof. Unless you want a long range lens (which has trouble fitting in a dome design) or need protection from vandalism (which the compact design of a dome is better suited for), there is very little difference between a dome or bullet camera's capabilities, the decision is mostly about what you think looks better in your space.

Choosing between Fixed, Vari-focal, and PTZ lenses

IP cameras come with one of three lens types. Fixed lenses have a focal point and angle of view that are not able to be modified. Both vari-focal and PTZ cameras have the ability for you to choose your viewing angle and level of zoom, but PTZ cameras are very expensive and can Pan and Tilt as well as Zoom (that's where we get PTZ). PTZ can be controlled remotely via a joystick. The viewing angle and level of zoom for a Vari-focal camera must be changed in person.

Vari-focal cameras have lenses that allow you to physically adjust the viewing angle and focus of a camera. The most common form of vari-focal is wide angle 2.8mm to telephoto 12mm. The terms sound complicated, but you've actually done this a ton of times already. Every time you twist the lens of a DSLR camera or push the zoom button on a digital camera, you are changing the focal length and viewing angle. In photography, we call this "zooming," but in surveillance we call these types of cameras "vari-focal."

About IP Security Cameras

IP security camera

One of the main reasons to use IP security cameras is that they do not need long rg59 coaxial cable runs. RG59 coaxial cable can only transmit up to 500 feet. With the help of video baluns, CAT5 (the cable for ip security cameras) can have cable runs up to 1500 feet (or 3000 feet if you have a MAN network). In modern architectural design for big warehouses, corporate offices, large complexes, and even high end homes the contractor usually runs Ethernet jacks in most rooms in a building's infrastructure. This means that for most newer construction projects, the cable for an IP camera system has already been run.

IP security cameras

IP Camera Systems, although having more expensive cameras, are often cheaper

Although IP Network Cameras are more expensive than Analog Security Cameras, you will get more advanced cameras that you can view from anywhere and the total cost of the system and installation may still be cheaper by using the pre-existing Cat5 cable network than paying a contractor to run rg59 cable through walls or floors. So, if your complex is massive or already has CAT5 cable runs, the more expensive, more advanced IP security cameras may actually be much cheaper when all the cost of buying and installing a CCTV system have been taken into account.

IP cameras can transmit H.264 compression

IP camera

Another great reason to use IP security cameras is that they can transmit h.264 video. The codecs is embedded into the firmware of the ip camera, this means that it can record independently of a main computer and can stream live video with nothing more than a CPU (analog cctv cameras require significant processing power and hard drive space to convert the video from an analog to a digital format).
