Real Time Video Requires A Lot Of Hard Drive Space
In the world of recording, real-time-video, will cut through hard-drive space like a butcher to a cow! Okay that was a stretch, but
it is a sharp sword. Depending on how many security cameras you have this problem can become a nuisance. If your CCTV application calls
for this kind of storage, then you will need to use this formula to estimate how much hard drive space you will need. The formula for H.264
and MPEG4 compression is 4gig per camera per day. That is real-time! So what you do is multiple each camera by 4 gig and you will find out
how many gigs you will burn through per day. Each day with just 4 security cameras, you will eat 16GIG of video. Most of all our security dvrs,
come with 250 gig hard-drives. To figure out how many days, you can divde 250gig by 16gig and find out how many days of video you can
store. As you can see with 4 cameras you can get a few days, however, anything over 8 cameras, you will need like 750 gig to 1 tera-byte of
hard-drives to collect at lest 3-5 days of video. Again this is directly related to the real-time-recording. 30 frames per second for even just
one camera is a lot. So make sure you know if you are looking for real-time that you know you are going to need to make sure you have plenty
of hard-drives to hand the data archive. Just make sure you back it up or burn it to a hard copy before the dvr loops over. Feel free to use our
DVR hard drive calculator to help you figure out how much record time you will have manipulating some settings!
