Real Time Recording is simply a security DVR that displays and records at 30 frames per second per channel of security. Audio is also recorded in real-time. The purpose of recording in real-time is to have the smoothest picture. In security, you cannot afford to have glitchy, unclear, video. For 4 channel DVRs, you have 120 fps total. You can determine whether a DVR records in real-time by multiplying the amount of cameras by 30 (represents the frames per second). If the outcome displayed is less than that number, then you are not looking at a real-time DVR.

PC Based DVRs Have The Best Real-Time Recording

PC based DVRs are king when it comes to real-time recording DVRs. They can support up to 1920 frames per second on a 64 channel DVR system. Real-time recording is a process that works best on it's own separate video card. PC based DVRs are more consistent at the Real-Time Recording DVR process because the it as separate expansion slots that we plug our H.264 video cards into. This allows for all the processing to be created on another circuit board, before it reaches the main chip set on the motherboard. Real-Time Recording DVRs just does not get better than PC-Based ones, trust us.

Standalone DVRs Real-Time Recording Is Only Up to 16 Channels

There is a limit when it comes to real-time recording DVR in standalone units. After understanding why PC based DVRs can manage real-time recording on a separate card, then you can see why standalone units can not typically handle real-time recording past 12 or 16 channels. Simply there is just enough room and this solution becomes unmanageable. A 16 channel standalone DVR will weigh like 20 lb, with 2 Tera bytes installed. So again you see that cost for owning a PC becomes more understandable when you can see how efficient the system can work for multiple cameras.
